At 165 feet above the floor of the rotunda, William Slater’s ceiling mural depicts seagulls, the state bird, soaring among sunset-tinted clouds. The largest birds’ wingspans are approximately six-feet wide. In 1969, Alfred E. Lippold & Co. made repairs in the fresco. During the 2004–2008 restoration, the entire ceiling was repaired by artists working with Evergreen Painters, and any birds added after the original painting were removed.
