This sculpture of Dr. Martha Hughes Cannon, the first woman state senator in the United States, was erected by Utah sculptor Laura Lee Stay Bradshaw. In 1896, when Utah first became a state, Cannon ran for a State Senate seatĀ in an at-large election. Cannon defeatedĀ her husband and three other men. In addition to her career as a state senator and prominent suffragist, Cannon held a medical degree and promoted important health policy in Utah.
